So finally, after nearly a decade of pokes, likes, status updates and pictures posted I decided enough is enough and I am re-claiming the little time I have on this earth. No more checking for social media updates on my phone(Wooo Hoooo). It feels rather liberating, to say the least.
To many users, it might not be that obvious because the setting is hidden from the usual Facebook settings, but you can permanently delete your Facebook account.
Remember there are two things you can do:
- Deactivate your account
- Doesn't delete anything merely “hides” everything e.g you won’t show up on searches etc.
- You can reactivate if you change your mind
- Delete your account
- Actually deletes your account, permanently. Here is how:
- Be sure because you can’t change your mind
1. Download a copy of your data
The first thing you want to do is download a copy of your data. If you not sure how then go here. This is optional but wouldn't you rather want to see all the data they gathered on you. If you have an android this might include phone and sms log metadata as well.
How to download your Facebook data
2. Process your delete
- Navigate to https://web.facebook.com/help/delete_account
Remember the following:
It may take up to 90 days from the beginning of the deletion process to delete all of the things you've posted, like your photos, status updates or other data stored in backup systems. While we are deleting this information, it is inaccessible to other people using Facebook.
There are many popups asking you “if you are sure” so be sure before you proceed.
And finally after you logout you have one last chance of instructions.
If you are still unsure then find some fun inspiration here and I'm sure you can relate to at least a few.
